Training the public to slow down in work zones helps, but you cannot count on it. Here is how driver education and physical protection work together to keep crews safe.
Public awareness campaigns tell drivers to slow down and move over. That messaging saves lives. It also has a ceiling, because distraction, fatigue, and impairment do not respond to a billboard. A safety plan that relies on every driver doing the right thing is not a plan. It is a hope.
Where education helps
- Move-over laws are more effective when drivers already understand them, so signage and repetition matter.
- Trained drivers scan further ahead and react earlier to arrow boards and tapers.
- Fleet drivers who understand work-zone geometry set up safer, more predictable zones.
Where it stops, and what fills the gap
You will always face drivers who never got the message or ignored it. That is the case for a truck-mounted attenuator.
