Chassis Upfit Compatibility File for Traffic Control Trucks

Before an attenuator or bed goes on a chassis, confirm the two are compatible. This file collects the specs that decide whether an upfit will work and stay crash-compliant.

Not every attenuator fits every chassis, and a mismatch can void the crash rating. Before committing to an upfit, gather the numbers that determine compatibility. Keep them in one file so the installer, the buyer, and the compliance record all agree.

Chassis specs to capture

  • GVWR and confirmation it meets the attenuator's minimum, around 26,000 lb or more
  • Frame rail dimensions and rated section modulus
  • Wheelbase and cab-to-axle measurement
  • Front and rear axle ratings
  • Electrical system capacity for boards and warning lights

Attenuator and equipment specs

  • Attenuator model, test level, and MASH 2016 eligibility letter
  • Mounting configuration required by the eligibility letter
  • Weight of the attenuator and any bed or board being added
  • Power draw of the arrow board, message board, and lights

Compatibility sign-off

  • Confirm chassis GVWR meets or exceeds the attenuator requirement
  • Confirm the mount matches the tested configuration on the eligibility letter
  • Confirm total added weight keeps the truck under its rating
  • Record who verified compatibility and the date

If the chassis GVWR falls below the attenuator's minimum, the pairing is not compatible. An underweight truck can be pushed forward on impact and defeat the protection.
