The Importance of Truck-Mounted Attenuators in Road Safety
Work-zone crashes are a persistent risk for road crews. A truck-mounted attenuator is the barrier that turns a potentially fatal impact into a survivable one.
Road crews work feet from moving traffic. When a driver drifts, falls asleep, or misjudges a lane closure, the crew has almost no margin. A truck-mounted attenuator is the piece of equipment designed to absorb that mistake before it reaches people.
What the attenuator does
Parked as a shadow vehicle behind the crew, the TMA takes the errant vehicle's hit and dissipates the energy. It steers the impact away from the coffin corner of the cab, protecting both the crew ahead and the driver of the striking vehicle. Without it, that same crash transfers its full force to whatever is in the way.
Why the standard matters
- MASH 2016 is the current crash-test standard, replacing the older NCHRP 350.
- TL-2 devices cover work at 45 mph and below; TL-3 devices cover 50 mph and above.
- A passing crash test earns an FHWA eligibility letter, the proof agencies rely on.
Non-MASH-2016 units built before 2023 have to be off the road by January 1, 2030. Fleets should plan their transition rather than wait for the deadline.
