The Scorpion TMA: What Sets the Non-Blade Design Apart
The Scorpion by TrafFix Devices uses an energy-absorption approach rather than a crumpling blade body. Here is how it works and where it fits in a fleet.
The Scorpion, built by TrafFix Devices, is a truck-mounted attenuator that uses a non-blade energy-absorption system. Instead of relying on a crumpling body, it absorbs an impact through its own engineered structure, then redirects the striking vehicle away from the crew and the cab's coffin corner.
How the energy-absorption design behaves
On impact, the system decelerates the striking vehicle over a controlled distance. Because the design is not built around sacrificial blades, the repair conversation after a hit looks different from a blade unit. That matters when you are weighing downtime and parts across a fleet.
Where it fits
- MASH 2016 compliant with an FHWA Eligibility Letter, so it meets current agency requirements.
- Available in TL-3 for highway-speed work zones tested at roughly 62 mph.
- Deploys in about 20 seconds and transfers between trucks in around 10 minutes.
Heartland Fleet + Traffic can spec, source, and re-certify these units, so support does not end at the sale.
