Customizing an Attenuator Truck for Your Crew
A stock truck covers most jobs, but the right chassis, attenuator, and board setup can make a real difference for how your crew works. Here is what to consider before you order.
Two crews doing similar work can need very different trucks. Speed, board requirements, and how the unit gets stored all shape the build. Getting the spec right up front is cheaper than fixing it later.
Start with speed and weight
The road speed sets the attenuator. TL-2 covers work zones up to 45 mph; TL-3 handles 50 mph and above and is crash-tested near 62 mph. The chassis has to carry enough weight, roughly 26,000 lb GVWR or more, to keep a striking vehicle from riding underneath. Those two choices anchor everything else.
Attenuator and boards
- Scorpion non-blade or Blade with 12 crumpling blades, matched to your test level
- 15-lamp or 25-lamp arrow board for lane closures
- Changeable message sign for detours and advisories
- Lighting and ballast configured for how you deploy
We fit and test the attenuator and boards at our North Texas shop, then confirm the deployment cycle before the truck goes out. That way the finished unit arrives ready to work, not ready to troubleshoot.
Tell us the road, the speed, and the traffic control plan. The right questions up front prevent an expensive re-spec down the line.
