Weatherproofing and Maintaining Traffic Boards
Arrow boards and message signs live outdoors in sun, rain, and road grime. A little maintenance keeps every lamp lit and every message readable when traffic needs it.
A board that a driver cannot read is worse than useless, it gives the crew a false sense of protection. Arrow boards and changeable message signs take a beating from weather and road spray, and that wear is easy to ignore until a lamp dies at the wrong moment.
Where boards fail
- Water intrusion at seals and connectors
- Corroded wiring and grounds from road salt and moisture
- Dead or dimming lamps on 15-lamp and 25-lamp arrow boards
- Dirty lenses that cut visibility in bright sun
Most of these start small. A cracked seal lets in moisture, moisture corrodes a connector, and a section of the board goes dark. Catching it early is a wipe-down and a reseal; catching it late is a rewire.
A simple maintenance routine
Check every lamp and message segment at the start of the shift. Keep lenses clean so the board reads in direct sun. Inspect seals and connectors monthly, and re-seal before the wet season rather than during it. On a message board, cycle through the stored messages to confirm each one displays correctly.
Test boards in daylight and at night. A board that looks fine at noon can wash out under headlights, and that is when it matters most.
