How Well-Maintained TMAs Improve Roadwork Safety
A truck-mounted attenuator only protects a crew if it works when it is hit. Maintenance is the link between a rated device and real protection on the road.
A TMA parks as a shadow vehicle behind the crew and absorbs an errant vehicle's hit, steering it away from the coffin corner of the cab. That protection depends on every part of the system functioning at the moment of impact. Maintenance is what keeps that promise real.
What good maintenance protects
- Deployment: the attenuator has to reach its rated position, roughly a 20-second cycle, every time.
- Impact function: blades, cartridges, or absorbing elements must be in serviceable condition.
- Signaling: arrow boards and lamps warn drivers before they reach the buffer.
The gap between rated and ready
A device can carry a valid FHWA eligibility letter and still fail in the field if it has not been maintained. A leaking hydraulic system, a partly deployed attenuator, or a unit with damaged elements does not perform to its rating. Re-certification closes that gap by confirming the equipment still meets the standard it was built to.
The rating tells you what the device can do when new and correct. Maintenance and re-certification tell you whether it still can.
