Improving Nighttime Visibility on Texas Highways with LED Arrow Boards
Night work raises the stakes on visibility. LED arrow boards give drivers a clear signal in the dark, but only when the mode and brightness are set for the conditions.
Most fatal work-zone crashes involve a driver who did not react in time. At night, that window shrinks. LED arrow boards, in 15-lamp or 25-lamp configurations, give approaching drivers a bright, unambiguous signal about which way to move.
Getting night settings right
- Dim the board for night conditions; a board left at daytime brightness can dazzle drivers and hide the pattern.
- Confirm the directional arrow matches the actual lane closure, not a leftover caution mode.
- Check every lamp before a night shift, since a missing lamp is harder to spot in the dark.
Placement in low light
At night, drivers pick up the board sooner but judge distance worse. Give them enough lead distance to read the arrow and merge at highway speed. Keep the board clear of the truck body and other equipment so nothing blocks the sightline as they close in.
A board that is bright, correctly aimed, and set to the right mode does the job. One left at daytime brightness at 2 a.m. can do the opposite.
