How We Upfit Custom Traffic Safety Trucks

A custom TMA truck is a series of decisions, from chassis to attenuator to signaling. Here is how we take a spec from conversation to a truck on the road.

A custom safety truck is not a catalog order. It is a set of choices matched to the work a crew does, made in the right order so nothing gets bolted on that does not fit. We handle the upfit in our own shop, which keeps the process under one roof.

The build sequence

  • Define the work: speeds, job types, and crew size drive every later choice
  • Set the attenuator test level, TL-2 or TL-3, from the posted speeds
  • Choose a chassis with GVWR above the underride threshold, around 26,000 lb or more
  • Mount signaling: arrow board size and whether the job needs a message sign
  • Add storage, lighting, and any RPM equipment the scope calls for
  • Verify compliance with a current FHWA eligibility letter

Upfit where it is serviced

Because we handle the upfit in our own shop, changes to a spec do not wait on an outside vendor, and the people who configure the truck are the ones who repair and re-certify it later. That continuity matters when a truck comes back after a strike or a season of wear. The shop already knows the build.

The order of decisions matters. Get the attenuator test level and chassis GVWR right first, because every other choice sits on top of those two.
