Arrow boards and message boards do different jobs in a work zone. Knowing when each one belongs, and how to set them, keeps drivers informed and crews safer.
Arrow boards and message boards both warn drivers, but they are not interchangeable. An arrow board tells drivers which way to move. A message board tells them what is happening. Used together and set correctly, they give approaching traffic a clear picture of the work zone.
Arrow boards

- Direct drivers to merge left, right, or proceed with caution.
- Depend on correct mode selection and full working lamps to display an unambiguous pattern.
Message boards
Changeable message signs add context an arrow cannot: lane closures ahead, expected delays, or a specific hazard. Keep the wording short and readable at speed, and make sure it agrees with the arrow boards and signs downstream. A message that contradicts the physical setup costs you driver trust.
Use the arrow board to say where to go and the message board to say why. Check lamps and modes before every shift so both display exactly what you intend.
